Smoking Bird

a monthly zine for stories and art

ABOUT

Smoking Bird is

a monthly zine from the editors of Judy Magazine, a semi-annual anthology of recipes, stories, and art.

With Smoking Bird we are creating an inclusive environment that promotes experimentation and connection through fast responses, editorial feedback, and themed prompts.

This community of writers and artists is connected by a shared interest in taking the themes at the heart of Judy Magazine — nostalgia, food, and family—and creating work that is beautiful and provocative.

  • Submissions that are (almost) always open

  • Original themed prompts

  • Fast responses, editorial feedback, and unique opportunities to engage with the zine

  • New writing and art published monthly

What to expect from us:

What we will expect from you:

Prose  (fiction/nonfiction)

  • 1 piece of 4,000 words or less

  • 3 flash pieces of 1,000 words or less

Art (across all mediums)

  • 5  images, videos, cartoons, quilts, tattoos, etc.

And…

  • We value work across mediums that is original and bold.

  • Simultaneous submissions are absolutely allowed at Smoking Bird.

    • Please notify us if a piece you’ve submitted is accepted elsewhere.

A message from the editors

Smoking Bird is not a paying market, though we strive to become one.

Judy Magazine is a labor of love built on familial ideals that are in direct conflict with the commodification of “art,” so it will remain free to all writers and artists for as long as we can keep the lights on.

Smoking Bird charges fees because we are providing a service that we as writers appreciate: fast responses, editorial feedback, and a platform that gives emerging and marginalized writers and artists a place to be weird and authentic.

We are committed to exploring innovative ways to keep the publications truckin’ and to minimize the general suckiness of capitalism and commerce. Right now that looks like:

  • Providing editorial services for a small fee

  • Granting our Patreon contributors special access to connect with other writers and artists (and maybe even receive merchandise made by the ACTUAL Judy)

  • Doing our best to promote our writers’ and artists’ work on social media

And creating VERY cool merch that we think you’d really dig…

Fuck Capitalism
